Five permit rules that catch builders mid-project
- Pickering
Inside its designated Tree Protection Areas, protects trees at a small size. Confirm the protected size with Pickering. Outside those areas, no City permit applies.
- Hamilton
Hamilton has no single tree bylaw. Ancaster, Dundas and Stoney Creek keep old rules for specified trees or land only. Woodland, City tree, conservation, development and mapped rules apply on top, anywhere in the city.
- Toronto
The ravine bylaw protects trees of any size. A 5 cm sapling in a ravine zone gets the same protection as a 100 cm oak.
- Richmond Hill
Lowered the minimum diameter from 20 cm to 15 cm in 2025. Active Plan of Subdivision or Site Plan applications submit arborist-prepared preservation plans through planning and do not need a separate Tree Permit. Cash-in-lieu is $945 per required replacement tree.
- Brampton
Continuing offence penalty: up to $10,000 per day. Replanting requirements are at the Commissioner's sole discretion.
