The ISA Certified Arborist designation requires passing a written exam covering tree biology, diagnosis, risk assessment, pruning, soil science, and professional practice. Certification must be renewed through ongoing continuing education.

What these credentials mean for your report
Ontario has no provincial licence for arborists. Municipalities, courts and insurers accept ISA certification as proof of formal training and a passed exam.
Municipal by-laws across Southern Ontario accept ISA Certified Arborist as a credential on an arborist report. They also accept Ontario-qualified arborists, consulting arborists and Registered Professional Foresters. Sergiy Litvinov's certification number goes on every report we issue and can be confirmed through ISA's public directory.
Independence is the other factor. Because The Arborist Group does no hands-on tree work, there is no financial incentive to push any particular outcome. The report reflects what we find on site.
Report requirements in Metro Vancouver
In Vancouver, Protection of Trees By-law No. 9958 s.3.1 says the person who issues a certificate must hold a certification, accreditation or membership referred to in the By-law, and a licence under the City's License By-law that is current when the certifier signs. Under s.3.2, the certificate must be dated no more than 30 days before the permit application.
Surrey, New Westminster and White Rock define the report author as an ISA Certified Arborist who also holds the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification. New Westminster accepts ISA or BC ITA certification and also requires a City or intermunicipal business licence. Ask us before you order a report in those cities.
