Get a Second Opinion Before You Remove a Tree
Removal is permanent. Before you sign off on it, it is worth knowing whether the recommendation came from someone with a financial reason to make it.
Why a Second Opinion, Specifically
Most companies that give you a removal quote also do the removal. That is not a scandal. It is simply how the tree service industry is set up. But it means the firm assessing whether your tree needs to come down earns money only if the answer is yes.
A second opinion breaks that link. When the arborist looking at your tree has no removal crew waiting on the answer, the recommendation reflects what is actually happening with the tree rather than what keeps the crew booked.
This matters most for a large or mature tree, where removal and replanting can run into the thousands of dollars, and where the tree took decades to grow into whatever it is providing your property: shade, privacy, or simply the reason the yard looks the way it does.

ISA certification confirms technical competence but does not by itself confirm independence. A certified arborist employed by a removal company is still working for a business that profits when trees come down. The distinction to look for is whether the firm performs hands-on tree work at all. ASCA membership (American Society of Consulting Arborists) is a further signal, since ASCA members commit to a consulting-only practice.

For a straightforward removal with a clear permit path, a second opinion often confirms what the first company said. Where it is more likely to change something:
Contested permit applications
If a neighbour has objected or the city has asked for more documentation, a report with no financial stake in the outcome holds up better under that scrutiny than one from the firm that quoted the removal.
Heritage or specially designated trees
Municipalities apply more scrutiny to protected or significant trees. A conflict-free assessment gives the application a stronger foundation, and gives you a clearer picture of what you would actually be losing.
Genuine uncertainty about whether removal is necessary
If part of you is not convinced removal is the only option, that instinct is worth checking. An arborist with nothing to gain either way will tell you if the tree can reasonably be retained, and will document why if it cannot.
