A self-triage guide for a tree that looks like it might be dying, leaning, or damaged. Work through the section that matches what you are seeing, and use the signal at the end of each item to decide what to do next.
This guide will not diagnose your tree. No page can, and any resource that claims to give you a firm answer from a description or a photo is overselling what is possible without standing in front of the tree. What this guide can do is help you tell the difference between a symptom worth watching and one worth acting on, so you know how urgently to move.

Canopy Thinning or Dieback
What the top and outer branches of the tree look like compared to prior years.

Mushrooms or Fungal Conks at the Base

What a Formal Tree Risk Assessment Actually Is
A tree risk assessment is a structured evaluation that follows the ISA's Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) methodology. Rather than a general opinion on tree health, it produces a written report rating the likelihood of failure, the likelihood something would be struck, and the consequences if it happened, combined into an overall rating of low, moderate, high, or extreme.
It is worth paying for one when a structural defect and a target line up: a tree with decay, a crack, or root damage standing near a house, driveway, or area people use. It is also the right document when an insurer, a lawyer, or a municipality specifically asks for formal risk documentation rather than a general health note.

Call 911 first if anyone is trapped or a structure was hit

Safety first
Keep people, pets, and vehicles away from the tree and anything it is leaning toward or hanging over, including power lines. If a limb or the whole tree is touching a line, treat it as an electrical hazard and contact the utility, not a tree service.

Photograph the damage from multiple angles, including the base of the tree and any exposed roots, before cleanup starts. Insurers generally want this documentation, and once debris is cleared, it cannot be recreated.
Get an independent opinion before the removal crew decides
In the aftermath of a storm, the crew clearing debris in your neighbourhood is not always the right party to be making the removal call, particularly if that crew also does the removal work. An independent assessment, from a firm with no stake in whether the tree comes down, gives you an answer that reflects the tree's actual condition rather than the schedule of the crew standing in front of you.

How do I know if my tree is dying?
