Tree Removal Reports in Mississauga
Mississauga protects private trees as small as 15 cm in diameter. Our ISA Certified Arborists prepare the report Mississauga requires for your removal permit.
How Tree Removal Permits Work in Mississauga
Mississauga's Private Tree Protection Bylaw (0474-2005, updated) has one of the lowest diameter thresholds in the GTA. Trees as small as 15 cm in diameter are protected. If you're planning any tree work on your property, check first.
Check if your tree is protected
Any private tree with a trunk diameter of 15 cm or more (measured at 1.4 m above ground) is protected. That covers most trees beyond the sapling stage. Heritage Trees have additional protections regardless of size.
Get an arborist report
Mississauga requires a report from a certified arborist as part of the permit application. The report must document tree species, size, health, structural condition, removal justification, and a replanting plan. We prepare reports tailored to Mississauga's specific form and submission requirements.
Submit the application and fee
Applications go to the city's Parks and Forestry department. The base permit fee is $399.77 (including HST) for one healthy tree, with an additional $139.72 for each additional healthy tree. Dead or dying trees carry no fee. Include the arborist report, your site plan, and tree photos with your submission.
City review
Mississauga's forestry staff review the application and may schedule a site visit. Standard processing time is 2 to 3 weeks. Applications involving Heritage Trees or trees in Environmentally Significant Areas take longer.
Replanting requirements
Mississauga calculates replanting based on the diameter of the removed tree: one replacement tree for every 15 cm of trunk diameter. If you can't replant on site, cash-in-lieu payments apply. The city is serious about maintaining its urban canopy.
Mississauga Permit Fees & Timeline
Heritage Trees and trees in Environmentally Significant Areas may have additional requirements. Fees are subject to the city's annual fee schedule updates.
Our report fee: from $250 (up to 3 trees)
2 business day turnaround. No payment until report delivery.
Tree Removal Permit FAQ: Mississauga
Common questions about tree removal permits in Mississauga
Why does Mississauga protect trees as small as 15 cm?
Mississauga has aggressive urban canopy targets. The lower threshold means the city captures younger, faster-growing trees in its protection framework. For context, a 15 cm diameter tree is roughly 5 to 6 inches across, so most established trees on your property are likely covered.
What is a Heritage Tree in Mississauga?
Heritage Trees are specimens the city designates as having outstanding size, age, species rarity, or historical significance. These trees get extra protection and removing them is more difficult. Your arborist report needs to confirm whether any trees on your property carry a Heritage designation.
How much does a tree removal permit cost in Mississauga?
The base permit fee is $399.77 (including HST) for one healthy tree, plus $139.72 for each additional healthy tree on the same application. There is no fee for dead or dying trees. These fees are separate from the cost of the arborist report. You may also face replanting costs or cash-in-lieu payments as a condition of approval.
What if my tree is dead or hazardous in Mississauga?
Dead and hazardous trees still require a permit before removal. However, the city typically fast-tracks applications where there's an immediate safety concern. Our arborist report documents the hazard clearly, which helps speed up review. In true emergencies, contact the city first, then apply for the permit retroactively.
Does the Mississauga bylaw apply to trees on construction sites?
Yes. Trees on development and construction sites are protected under the same bylaw, and developers face the same permit requirements. Many construction projects also require a Tree Preservation Plan as part of site plan approval. We handle both the individual tree permits and the broader preservation plans.
Can I prune a protected tree without a permit in Mississauga?
Routine pruning that removes less than 25% of the live crown does not require a permit. But anything beyond that, or any work that could injure the trunk or root system, needs approval. When in doubt, get a permit. The fines for unauthorized tree injury are the same as for unauthorized removal.
