Heritage Trees are specimens the city designates as having outstanding size, age, species rarity, or historical significance. Your arborist report needs to confirm whether any trees on your property carry a Heritage designation.

Confirm with Mississauga for the fee on the first healthy tree. Each additional healthy tree on the same application adds $123.65 before HST. There is no fee for dead or dying trees. These fees are separate from the cost of the arborist report. Approval also requires one replacement tree per 15 cm of trunk removed, or cash-in-lieu if they don't fit on site (Confirm with Mississauga for the amount).

Dead and hazardous trees still require a permit before removal. A dead or dying tree has no permit fee and needs no arborist report. A hazardous tree goes through the standard application with a report, and our report documents the hazard for the City's review. The bylaw does exempt Emergency Work from the permit requirement (s. 17(2)). That means work needed to end an immediate danger to life or property, as the City's Commissioner determines it. If a tree poses that kind of danger, call the City before you act.

Routine pruning that removes less than 25% of the live crown does not require a permit. But anything beyond that, or any work that could injure the trunk or root system, needs approval. The fines for unauthorized tree injury are the same as for unauthorized removal.
