Tree Bylaws in Mississauga
By-law 0021-2022 replaced Mississauga's By-law 0254-2012 on April 1, 2022. The current bylaw protects all private trees with a diameter of 15 cm or more, which is a lower threshold than many neighbouring municipalities. Many common species reach 15 cm within 10 to 15 years of planting, and those trees need a permit.
An application needs an arborist report unless the tree is dead or dying, and the city charges a fee for each healthy tree. Each additional healthy tree is $123.65 before HST. Confirm with Mississauga for the fee on the first tree. Dead or dying trees have no fee. Replanting requirements are tied directly to the size of the tree being removed: one replacement tree is required for every 15 cm of trunk diameter, and a security deposit is required. If you cannot replant on site, cash-in-lieu payments apply.
