Tree Removal Reports in Caledon
Caledon's new Tree Preservation By-law protects trees 30 cm and larger. We prepare the report the Town's application requires, and sort out Niagara Escarpment overlap where it applies.
How Tree Removal Permits Work in Caledon
Caledon's Tree Preservation By-law 2025-101 took effect January 1, 2026, giving the town a private tree permit requirement for the first time. It protects trees 30 cm or larger in diameter, and a separate older bylaw governs woodlands.
Confirm the diameter and check for overlap
Measure at 1.4 m above grade. If the tree is 30 cm or larger, a permit applies. We also check whether the property sits within the Niagara Escarpment Plan area or a mapped woodland, since either adds a second approval track.
Get an arborist report
Caledon's application requires documentation of the tree and the reason for removal, including species, condition, diameter, and a plan overlaid on a current property survey showing tree locations.
Submit the application
Applications go through the Town's online form. There's no application fee as of 2026. We include the arborist's documentation and, where applicable, evidence of Niagara Escarpment Commission approval.
Town review
Natural Heritage staff review the submission. The Town hasn't published a standard turnaround time, so we build in extra runway on projects touching the Escarpment or a woodland designation.
Replanting under the DBH-tiered table
Approved removals carry replacement obligations on a lookup table tied to diameter: from 1 replacement tree for a 10-20 cm removal up to 5 for anything over 65 cm.
Caledon Permit Fees & Timeline
No application fee as of 2026. Properties within the Niagara Escarpment Plan area may also need separate Niagara Escarpment Commission approval.
Current report offer: from $200 (up to 3 trees)
2 business day turnaround. No payment until report delivery.
Tree Removal Permit FAQ: Caledon
Common questions about tree removal permits in Caledon
What size tree needs a permit in Caledon?
Any tree 30 cm or larger in diameter at breast height, on private property, under Tree Preservation By-law 2025-101, in effect since January 1, 2026.
Does my Caledon property need Niagara Escarpment Commission approval too?
If your property is within the Niagara Escarpment Plan area, yes, in addition to the Town's tree permit. The two approvals don't automatically run in sequence, so confirming Escarpment status early avoids delays.
How much does a Caledon tree removal permit cost?
There is no application fee as of 2026.
What replacement trees does Caledon require?
A DBH-tiered lookup table: 1 replacement tree for a 10-20 cm removal, 2 for 21-35 cm, 3 for 36-50 cm, 4 for 51-65 cm, and 5 for anything over 65 cm.
What happens if I remove a tree without a permit in Caledon?
Contraventions carry a fine of $500 to $100,000, plus up to $10,000 per day for continuing offences, and the Town can require replanting on top of any fine.
