Tree Bylaws in Pickering

Pickering updated its tree protection rules in 2024 with By-law 8073/24, one of the more protective bylaws in the region. Unlike most GTA municipalities that only regulate trees above 20 or 30 cm, Pickering protects any tree with a trunk diameter of just 2.5 cm or more. In practical terms, this means almost every mature tree on a Pickering property requires a permit before it can be removed or significantly injured.

The standard permit fee is $155. If the tree is dead or poses a genuine safety hazard and you submit a certified arborist report documenting that condition, the permit fee is waived. The City also reserves the right to send its own arborist for a $50 site inspection if they want to verify the report independently. There is no dedicated online permit portal; applications are submitted by PDF form directly to the City.

Pickering has a significant amount of environmentally sensitive land, roughly 38 percent of the city area. Properties near significant woodlands, watercourses, and adjacent green spaces face additional scrutiny under the City's natural heritage policies. Any tree within these designated areas may trigger requirements beyond the standard tree protection bylaw.

We handle Pickering permit applications regularly and know what level of documentation the City expects. Whether you have a straightforward removal or a more complex situation involving sensitive areas, we prepare reports that satisfy the City's reviewers and minimize back-and-forth.

What Pickering Clients Say

We had a silver maple that had been losing major branches over the garage. Submitted the arborist's hazard assessment and the permit fee was waived entirely. Removal was approved quickly and we didn't have to fight for it.

Hazard tree removal, Pickering Village

Our property backs onto a Duffins Creek tributary, so we knew the City would look closely at our deck project. The arborist mapped out every protected tree and produced a tree protection plan the building department accepted without revisions.

Deck addition, West Shore

New subdivision development near a woodland block. We needed a detailed tree inventory and construction impact assessment that would satisfy both the City and the conservation authority. They handled both and kept the project on schedule.
