Tree Bylaws in Pickering
Pickering's Tree Protection By-law 8073/24 protects trees inside designated Tree Protection Areas, shown on the bylaw's Schedule A map. Inside them, a protected tree needs a permit before it is removed. The protected size is 2.5 cm (inside the Tree Protection Area on Schedule A, excluding Regional Municipality of Durham Woodland By-law 30-2020 woodlands and lands owned or regulated by the TRCA or CLOCA). Outside them, no City permit is needed.
The permit fee is lower when a certified arborist report comes with the application than when the City's arborist has to inspect the tree. A dead, diseased or injured tree in a protection area still needs a permit, and there is no charge when a certified arborist report comes with the application. The fees are $52 (per permit with a certified arborist report, tree not dead, diseased or injured, no HST); $52 (Permit for a dead, diseased or injured tree requiring a City arborist inspection); $155 (per permit that needs a City arborist inspection, tree not dead, diseased or injured, no HST). Applications go to the City as a PDF form.
The City's Municipal Law Enforcement Services and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority both enforce the bylaw. Because the protection areas follow watercourses, many of these properties also sit in TRCA regulated land.
