Tree Bylaws in Ajax
Ajax's By-law 137-2006 protects trees on Greenbelt land, on land the Official Plan designates Environmental Protection, Open Space, Town-Wide Park, Community Park or Neighbourhood Park, and on land zoned Private Open Space. Single-dwelling lots under 1.2 hectares are exempt from the bylaw unless the property is zoned Private Open Space.
On a single-dwelling lot under 1.2 hectares, that exemption means a tree needs no municipal permit at any trunk size.
Durham Region's Woodland By-law 30-2020 also requires a permit in any woodland of 1 hectare or more.
Some websites list a 30 cm threshold for Ajax. The bylaw has none, so we check zoning and lot size instead.
Ajax tree permit rules
Minimum Diameter
Zone-based permit: required on Greenbelt land, on Environmental Protection, Open Space or park land in the Official Plan, and on land zoned Private Open Space. Single-dwelling lots under 1.2 hectares are exempt unless zoned Private Open Space.
Permit Fee
$1,547.60 for a Tree Cutting Permit (By-law 67-2025, Fees and Charges, 2026)
Penalty
First conviction: up to $10,000 or $1,000 per tree, whichever is greater. Subsequent conviction: up to $25,000 or $2,500 per tree, whichever is greater (By-law 137-2006, s.13.1)
