Tree Bylaws in Caledon
Caledon got its first private tree bylaw at the start of 2026. By-law 2025-101 protects any tree with a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more at breast height (1.37 m above ground). Before this bylaw took effect, private property owners in Caledon had no permit requirement for removing trees, regardless of size. That changed with the new bylaw, and many homeowners are still getting up to speed on what's now required.
The application is handled online through a Town form, and as of the bylaw's launch in early 2026, no permit fee is charged. You will still need to document the tree and provide reasons for removal. Properties near the Niagara Escarpment have an additional layer to clear: the Niagara Escarpment Commission has its own approval process that runs alongside the Town's. Woodlands of any significant size fall under a separate regional bylaw and require a different permit stream.
Caledon is largely rural and estate-lot country, with many properties carrying several large trees. If you are planning to remove a tree or build anywhere near one, now is the time to sort out whether a permit is required. We work across Caledon regularly and can quickly determine which rules apply to your property, prepare the required report, and help you submit an application that moves through without unnecessary delays.

What Caledon Clients Say
We had a large Norway spruce leaning toward the house that we wanted removed before winter. The arborist confirmed it was over 30 cm and submitted the permit application to the Town. The whole process was straightforward and the Town approved it within a few weeks.
Tree removal, Caledon East
Our property is near the Escarpment, so we needed both a Town permit and NEC sign-off for a tree near our addition. They handled both processes and made sure nothing was submitted out of order. Saved us from learning that lesson the hard way.
Home addition, Belfountain
Building a new garage on our rural lot with several mature oaks nearby. The arborist walked the property, mapped the root zones, and produced a tree protection report that satisfied the building department on the first review.
