Tree bylaws in Maple Ridge
Maple Ridge adopted a new tree bylaw on May 12, 2026, and it treats the first tree a household removes in a calendar year more lightly than the second. Tree Protection and Management Bylaw No. 8045-2026 repealed Bylaw 7133-2015 outright.
Size is the usual trigger. A tree counts at 20 cm DBH, and a stump counts once it is over 25 cm at grade. On City property, and in a Riparian or Conservation Area, the bylaw protects trees of every size. That area category covers SPEA land, slopes over 25% and land under a geotechnical or habitat covenant.
A resident pays $70 for the first tree in a calendar year. Tree permits are handled by the Urban Forestry team, and applications go to Trees@MapleRidge.ca by email instead of the online building-permit portal.
Maple Ridge Tree Bylaw at a Glance
A tree is protected when its diameter is 20 cm or more at 1.40 m, or when its stump is over 25 cm at grade. A multi-stem tree uses the sum of its three largest stems. Trees of any size are protected on City property and in a Riparian or Conservation Area.
Permit Fee
Residential: $70 for the first tree in a calendar year and $100 for each additional tree. Development: $300 plus $100 per tree. A re-inspection costs $150 and a permit change costs $100.

Special Zones
A Riparian or Conservation Area (SPEA land, slopes over 25%, or land under a geotechnical or habitat covenant) protects trees of any size. A Significant Tree is 60 cm DBH or more. Trees with a raptor, osprey or heron nest are protected, as are covenant trees and trees required by a rezoning, subdivision or building permit.
