Delta Arborist Reports for Tree Removal Permits, BC
Delta covers a tree 20 cm or wider at 1.4 m, and Sunshine Hills adds its own classes on top. Ask us about a report written to Tree Protection and Regulation Bylaw No. 7969.

The Delta permit, step by step
Delta takes applications through one online portal, eApply. The part that trips people up is the replacement count in Schedule B.
Check the size and the neighbourhood
A tree is covered at 20 cm or more at 1.4 m, when its 3 largest stems combine to 20 cm, or at 30.5 cm across the base when it is under 1.4 m tall. In Sunshine Hills, Amendment Bylaw 8575 moves the large-diameter class to 50 cm and adds significant trees at 70 cm.
Apply through eApply
Delta takes tree removal permit applications online through its eApply portal. Trees on City land, such as parks and highways, fall outside the bylaw (s.3.2(e)).
Pay the permit and replacement-plan fees
The standard permit is $100 flat plus $50 per tree, and the replacement-plan fee is $50 per tree. Significant trees in Sunshine Hills carry higher fees.
Plant or pay under Schedule B
Outside Sunshine Hills, a tree from 20 cm to 59 cm needs 2 replacements on site or 3 as cash in lieu, and a tree of 60 cm or more needs 3 or 4. Sunshine Hills counts run higher.
Delta permit fees and replanting
- Municipal permit fee
- $100 flat plus $50 per tree. Significant trees in Sunshine Hills cost $200 plus $100 per tree for 1 to 4 trees, or $300 plus $150 per tree for 5 or more. The replacement-plan fee is $50 per tree.

- Confirm with the City of Delta.
- Penalties
- Illegal cutting requires at least 5 replacement trees for each tree cut. Confirm fines with the City of Delta.
- Replanting
- Schedule B sets the count, planted on site or paid as cash in lieu. Outside Sunshine Hills, a tree from 20 cm to 59 cm needs 2 on site or 3 as cash in lieu, and a tree of 60 cm or more needs 3 or 4. In Sunshine Hills, a tree from 20 cm to under 50 cm needs 2 or 3, a tree of 50 cm or more needs 3 or 4, a significant tree of 70 cm or more needs 4 or 6, and 5 or more significant trees need 6 or 9. Schedule B cash values are $1,050, $933 and $875 per tree, with $2,100 flat for the tier of 5 or more significant trees. Security and flat cash-in-lieu are $700 per replacement tree. Replacement conifers must be at least 3.0 m tall and deciduous trees at least 7.0 cm caliper at 1.4 m, planted at least 3.0 m from another tree.

Delta tree permit questions
Does the Delta bylaw cover City trees?
No. City trees in parks, on highways and on other public land fall outside the bylaw (s.3.2(e)).
What is different in Sunshine Hills?
Amendment Bylaw 8575 sets the large-diameter class at 50 cm instead of 60 cm. It also adds significant trees at 70 cm: Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, Himalayan Cedar, Norway Spruce and Giant Redwood.
What does Delta require after an illegal cut?
Illegal cutting requires at least 5 replacement trees for each tree cut. Confirm fines with the City of Delta.
Can you take my Delta file?

Is a report different for a failing tree?
If the removal ground is a hazardous or high-risk tree, ask us first. Some Metro Vancouver bylaws require a report author who also holds the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification.
